We previously shared tips on managing clients which focused on discussions and setting expectations. As you work with clients via zoom or in person, it’s equally important to consider the impact of your presence. We’ve all been in a meeting where the presence of one individual can affect the entire meeting and team, either negatively or positively. As you work to be a more conscientious and effective business professional, here are some tips on how to be a positive presence in the room. These are provided courtesy of Phillip Weiss, an organizational consultant who also happens to be one of our clients.
Be a Positive Presence in the Room
We can all get a bit anxious during meetings. It’s a natural tendency. However, that anxious energy can have a really negative impact on others. Anxiety is actually the #1 transferrable emotion. So, what can you do to be less anxious and a positive presence in the room?
- Practice calm thinking and thoughtful communication. One person can help calm down an entire room.
- Focus on behaviors that can help engage others rather than competing with others to dominate a meeting. An engaging conversation is much more effective than a dominating one.
- Don’t retreat when others become difficult. Instead, remain engaged and calm. Adjust the way you communicate to help them calm down and communicate more effectively as well.
- Focus on Facts. Emotions can be the root cause of so many issues, and it’s often caused by perceived threats or interpretation of unclear information. What’s the solution? Focus on facts. Facts are your friends! Looking strictly at the facts can help calm people down.
