During the third week of our mastermind class studying the book titled, The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth by John C. Maxwell, the Remote COO team was led by Stefani Pady in a discussion centered around the 5th and 6th chapters. Chapter 5 is titled “The Law of Consistency” which focuses on the idea that “motivation gets you going, but discipline keeps you growing.”
Motivation vs. Discipline:
This important distinction between motivation and discipline is crucial in understanding what is necessary to continue on a path of growth even after we have lost the motivation to do so. Once the luster of learning something new or the newness of the moment has worn off, it is your discipline that will carry you through to growth. Being able to align your methods of motivation with your personality type can help you develop a strategy to play to your strengths in your journey of growth. Maxwell also points out that remaining patient through the process and valuing the process of growth itself will aid in your success. Growth does not happen overnight, so you may as well learn to enjoy the journey!
Consider Your Environment:
In Chapter 6 titled, “The Law of Environment” Maxwell focuses on the belief that your environment plays an integral role in your ability (or inability) to grow. Take a moment to consider your environment – do you find yourself in an environment conducive to your growth? To answer this question, you must first understand what it is that encourages you to grow. If you are getting what you need in your current environment, that’s fantastic! But, if not, you may need to make some changes. This may also include those you choose to spend your time with. Are you surrounding yourself with people who encourage your growth, or do they prefer you stay just as you are? Maxwell also suggests finding an accountability partner you can work with through this journey of growth. This person can help guide you on your chosen path and can help you steer clear of pitfalls along the way.
